If your competitors are receiving tons of traffic, thousands of backlinks and making money hand over fist, it would probably be a good idea to study what they are doing and mimic it on your own blog.
1. Find the competing top 10 websites on Google
Enter the main keywords you plan on using into Google and view the top 10 web sites in that niche market. Then dig a little deeper to try and figure out why they are ranking so well.
2. Find out what their main keywords are
Visit all your main competitor’s web sites and explore what they are using for their meta tags. In order to see this information, just do a view-source in your web browser and look at the main keywords they have and where they are repeated.

3. Do a backlink checks
Enter your competitors URL’s in Yahoo explorer and check out how many links are pointing back to their website. The number and quality of backlinks determine rankings.

4. Check traffic levels at Alexa.com
Check out the URLs of competitor sites in Alexa.com. It displays a monthly traffic history in graph format for each particular site.
5. Study the content
High conversion rates go hand in hand with well written content. Studying a competitors content will give you an idea what to include on your own blog.
6. Subscribe to competitors newsletters
This will allow you an opportunity to get a first hand look at what your competitors are offering their readers. Take every opportunity to learn from other successful bloggers.
7. Visit and contribute to their blog or forum
Always keep up communications with competitors; this will keep you up to date on recent news, new articles and an excellent opportunity to tap into the minds of their customers.
